It is easy, and so convenient. Full of flavor, delightfully sticky, as good or better than any I have had at an Asian restaurant. I mix 1/2C long grain rice with 1/2C Jasmine and it tastes like Heaven.
It is large enough to cook fish and veggies at the same time. Everything came out perfect and delicious. My husband and I love this steamer.
BUT that meal as wonderful as it was, was upstaged by the rice I cooked at the next meal. The best Kitchen "gadget" I have bought in years. The first meal we cooked was incredible.
We had fish on the bottom layer and fresh vegetables on the top.
The angle of illumination from an overhead kitchen light does not provide enough contrast to read the LCD. I have to keep a flashlight by the steamer to see how many minutes I've cranked into it even when the bright overhead kitchen light is on. So, unless you have really, really good eyes, I'd recommend going with the almost identical 5711 model Oster 5711 Mechanical Food Steamer which has a mechanical dial timer instead of an electronic LCD. This thing steam vegetables quite well and I'm rather happy with it. I only have one complaint - the little LCD timer is almost impossible to read.
Haven't had any trouble with the water pan yet, but it does look pretty small, so if you load it up and cook for extended periods, this could become an issue, but so far so good. But in a moist environment, you would probably have to use vinegar or something to fend off mold.
It's super easy to use and way easier to clean up than my old one and I love that it has a little timer on it. You can tell your food is cooked in plastic.it's good but if you have always used clay enclosures or even bamboo, you should know that these do not generally produce the same quality of flavor, but its great fast food and it is good.
This is a replacement for the one I wore out. I live in a very dry climate and excess moisture in the air is not a problem.
I'm happy with it. They've come a long way since my first one.
The visible reservoir doesn't open.no cleaning that nook out, so it has to be cleaned as soon as you finish with it.
It's so easy to use, it cooks just about everything, clean up is a breeze since you throw most of it in the dishwasher, and everything tastes really fresh. It re-heats leftovers and makes them like new again. My son gave me this steamer for Christmas a few years ago and I thought oh, I'll never use it. I've cooked every kind of fresh vegetable in it, I've made rice, I've even steamed crab legs to perfection. This is a great addition to anyone's kitchen, especially if you're busy and coming in late wondering what to cook for supper. But I was wrong. I bet I use it three times a week, at a minimum.
BUT, I give it 4 stars because I like to use stock instead of water when I steam, and the reservoir is for water only. I did find it VERY handy to cook instant mashed potatoes and my veggies at the same time (vs. This "set it-forget it everything cooker" is definitely worth buying. It's also a pain to have to wash a minimum of 4 pieces each time. using the microwave). Anything that can be cooked with steam, can be cooked in this. Bone-in chicken can be cooked in 30 minutes.
